Judith B. Kerman

Judith Kerman earned her Ph.D. in English from the University of Buffalo in 1977. From 1973 through 1997, she worked in university administration, rising to positions as Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs (Edinboro University of Pennsylvania) and Dean of Arts and Behavioral Sciences (Saginaw Valley State University, Michigan). As a Fulbright Scholar in the Dominican Republic, she taught computer basics, developed an extensive website for the Museo del Hombre Dominicano (Museum of Dominican Man), and translated Dominican women’s poetry and fiction, resulting in two books of translations and a video documentary on Dominican Carnaval.

During 14 years as Professor of English at Saginaw Valley, she served on the Executive Board of the faculty union and helped to establish a Master of Arts program in Multimedia, teaching courses in web design. She is the author or editor of ten collections of poetry, three books of translations, two poetry anthologies, and two scholarly anthologies. Founding editor of Earth’s Daughters magazine in Buffalo, NY (1971-present), she runs Mayapple Press, a literary publisher (1978-present), and has directed summer writers’ retreats for 20 years.

Kerman served on the Board of Trustees of the Saginaw Art Museum in Saginaw, Michigan, and on the Bay City, Michigan, Architectural Review Board, writing articles for the Bay City Times on historical architecture. She served as a Board member and co-President of Temple Beth Israel of Bay City, Michigan.

After moving to Woodstock in 2011, she joined the Woodstock Planning Board, where she has developed skills in Geographic Information Systems. She has also served on the Complete Streets Committee, the Critical Environmental Area working group, and the Housing Oversight Task Force. Her computer skills include Quickbooks, Photoshop, InDesign, MuseScore, and ArcMap.
